이상한 영어 발음 5 cough vs tough, common vs comfort vs combine

의료통역사로서 창피한 고백인데, 그동안 cough를 [cuff]로 잘못 알고 있었다. 두어달 전에 남편이랑 얘기하다가 cough는 tough, rough와 달리 [caaf]로 발음해야한다는 걸 처음 알았다. WTF 이 단어는 통역시 빈도가 무지 높은데 지난 1.5+년 동안 잘못 발음했다니 완전 충격! 한편으론, 이런 예측불가능한 quirks 덕분에 공부하는데 지루할 틈이 없다.

또 최근에 발견한 것은, con 또는 com으로 시작하는 단어들에 세가지 발음이 있다. common 같은 경우 [kɑː.mən]이고, comfort는 [kʌmfərt], combine은 [kəmbīn] (발음기호를 다른 사전들에서 잘라붙여서 균일하지 않음). 근데 이건 사전에 따라, 단어마다 다르다. 롱맨과 캠브리지는 세 가지로 구분하는 반면, 옥스퍼드와 웹스터는 두가지로 comfort와 combine의 com이 똑같이 [kəm]이다. 또 compass의 경우 웹스터는 [kəm]이 주발음이고 [kɑm]도 가능하다고 병기했고 롱맨은 [kʌm]. 굳이 규칙을 찾자면, com/n에 강세가 있으면 [ɑ] 또는 [ʌ]로 발음하고, 강세가 없으면 [ə]이다.
